Ministry of Tourism, Human Resource Development for Tourism Employment Program, 2004/06
HRD program for employment creation and income generation for rural communities utilizing their natural resources and cultural assets as tourism products. This partnership between the Fiji government, UNDP and the ILO, together with the local village communities resulted in the successful implementation of the plan with the establishment of 42 eco style backpacking resorts, 26 nature based tour operators and 4 eco-parks as tourist attractions. This stimulated a strong economic growth tool for these local communities, creating new employment, generating extra income, distributing tourism dollars more widely and alleviating poverty. Stakeholders, such as USP, Conservation International, Rainforest Alliance and WWF are offering their services in collaboration with government and other sponsors to promote the quality assurance for longer term sustainability.
